How to Decorate Your Picture Windows

How to Decorate Your Picture Windows

A picture window is a large window with a single pane of glass. Such windows are usually found in living rooms, kitchens and large bathrooms. They don’t open and don’t have mullions, unless they’re toward the edges. They serve to frame the view as if it were a picture. Picture windows were a fixture in post-war homes. The renewed interest in midcentury modern style has made the picture window popular again.

How to Decorate Your Picture Windows

Room With a View

Picture windows are often framed by other types of windows, like single- or double-hung windows. Their common measurements are between three and five feet wide and four to six feet tall. Since picture windows are generally used to frame a view, extend the curtain rod a few inches to the sides of the window. You can push the curtain as far to the edges as possible, making space for that beautiful view.

Blinds for Picture Windows

Because they became popular in modern post-war homes, blinds will suit these windows well. Depending on their width and the look you want, you might want to use one large blind or many blinds side by side. It’s usually easier to fit Cellular and Venetian blinds on them than softer Roman shades. Find them by searching for “large window blinds” and “picture window blinds”.

Today, the design of your picture window is only limited to your imagination. Remember, though, that these are nonfunctional windows, unlike other types including casement windows. So use them in an area where ventilation isn’t necessary.

Bay Windows, Blinds or Curtains

You can fix these windows in twos or threes, use them in a bay window, or turn them into a wall of several panes of glass. In a bay window, they’re particularly beautiful placed above a window seat. When decorating these windows, blinds are a great starting point. But if you love curtains, they will look beautiful on them as well. To add height to the room, hang them an inch or two from the ceiling or crown molding.
