Key Advantages of Fibrex® Material Window Frames

Strong frames are the key to long-term performance and structural integrity of quality replacement windows. This is why Renewal by Andersen® replacement window frames are made not of wood or vinyl, but of our own Fibrex® material. In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen of New Jersey takes a look at this unique composite and its advantages over standard frame materials.

Fibrex® Material Window Frames

What Is Fibrex Material?

Fibrex is a composite made of wood fibers and polymer. Our parent company Andersen® Corporation developed Fibrex in its search for a material that would combine the strength and durability of wood with the low-maintenance requirements and extrusion capabilities of vinyl. Research and development began in 1958. The resulting material, Fibrex, was patented in 1991 and has since become a key component of Andersen windows and patio doors.

Renewal by Andersen was later founded as Andersen Corporation’s full-service window replacement division, with the key distinction of being the only company to offer replacement window frames and sashes made of Fibrex.

Key Advantages of Fibrex

Our Fibrex window frames offer many advantages over standard frame materials like wood and vinyl.

  • Strength. The wood fibers and polymer that make up Fibrex are bonded at a molecular level and are more than the sum of their parts. We can build custom frames that are slimmer and can carry bigger glass panels – which means more natural lighting and wider views – without sacrificing structural integrity and long-term performance.

  • Energy efficiency. Fibrex material frames naturally slow down thermal transfer, and do not require insulating cores. Fibrex complements the energy performance of our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass, and is one of the features that helped earn the ENERGY STAR® certification on our replacement windows.

  • Low maintenance requirements. The factory-applied custom finishes on our Fibrex frames are on par with vinyl’s low maintenance requirements. This means our replacement windows require a quick wash and mild detergent to keep clean.

  • Responsible manufacturing. Fibrex contains at least 40% wood fiber that comes from reclaimed wood trimmings at Andersen’s woodworking facilities. Its polymer content likewise contains recycled material.
